Honey…I lost my ring down the sink drain!

By Hi Tech Plumbing And Air

It has to be one of the most dreaded things to happen to any woman. One minute you are cleaning your wedding band over your bathroom counter, and the next you are watching in horror as it bounces in slow motion into the deep, dark abyss that is your lavatory sink drain.

Don’t worry though – there is no need to panic. There are several easy steps to take to ensure a safe retrieval of your ring.

The most important thing to do when you lose any piece of jewelry is to make sure that NO water runs down the sink drain. All it takes is one small blast to send your ring down through the sewer system or into your septic tank. If it gets that far, you might as well consider it gone forever, because retrieving it then will be nearly impossible. The easiest way to prevent this from happening is to lay a towel over the sink handles as a reminder. Also, alert anyone else that is home not to use that sink and turn off the water supply lines underneath the sink. This was even if someone accidentally opens the faucet the water will be shut off to that faucet.

Next, carefully lift the drain plug or pop up assembly to see if the ring got caught in the tray. Sometimes if you’re lucky, the plug will stop your ring from sliding all the way down the drain and you can easily retrieve it.

Even if your ring vanishes from sight, it doesn’t mean that it’s gone forever. In most cases, small items end up in what’s known as the “P-trap,” a u-shaped pipe under your sink that helps prevent sewer gas from coming up through your sink drain. At this point, it may be time to call in the professionals to rescue your precious jewerly. A licensed drain cleaning professional will be able to handle disassembling the P-trap & using proper tools to extract the esteemed piece. Remember don’t fret… just call Hi-Tech!
